Thank you for sharing this. It was so informative. We’ve never had a cat with diabetes, but we had one years ago with FIV. Someone had abandoned him at the station. We nursed him for a year before he left us.
Ten, one of the three we have now, has hyperthyroidism, so we consult regularly with our vet.
As you say, these little family members can’t tell us what’s going on, so we just have to do the best we can.
Thank you very much, Louise. I've never had an FIV-positive kitty or one with thyroid problems. Maya had kidney disease and we just found out that Margo is developing the same.
It is difficult, too, not only because they can't tell us, but also because cats are such experts at hiding pain and discomfort. As they are solitary hunters who have evolved to hide problems, it is on us to be proactive and have them regularly checked, especially as they enter their senior years.
And excellent recommendations about how to care for diabetic cat!
As a dog parents we understand how important to have a good veterinary care. But also we need to do our own research to be able to provide a better care( medication, injection, diet…)
Mosi was a fearless wanderer! She was lucky to have you. Your writing is such a heartfelt yet informative read. I’ve saved this, really appreciate the mix of first-hand experience and well-researched advice.
It reminds me of Max's first mini road trip. While he didn’t resist staying inside the carrier, he spit up shortly after we hit the highway. He remained quiet standing in the mess until we got off at the nearest exit and cleaned his paws, and then he joined me in the back seat for the rest of the trip, excitedly watching the passing traffic outside the window just like Mosi.
Thank you, Bree, for such a wonderful note. Mosi was fearless. She just had this unstoppable life force in her. She survived so much and we used to joke that she probably traveled more than some people. She was a Hurricane Katrina rescue. We adopted her while on vacation in Utah, and the shelter then sent her by plane to us in DC. She moved to Belgium with us and went on two big road trips later in life.
I have so many stories to tell about our life together.
Thank you so much for sharing Mosi’s story with us. It’s so relatable to us and our Juniper 🩷 I love how you took Mosi with you on a trip! I feel lucky that I have pet sitters who are incredibly attentive to her diabetes, as well as neighbors who check on her during the day for us. I think having a good community helps enormously — a lot of my friends have pets and wanted to learn how to inject insulin in case there was an emergency where I couldn’t be home in time, and in case their pets ever got a diagnosis in life. But now I’m wondering if a Juniper road trip is in our future!
Beautiful pictures of a unique kitty. Even with her diabetes, she had a wonderful personality and enjoyed every moment of her life! ❤️
Sure above is very helpful for all cats with diabetes. You did so well in all these years 💪!
Thank you so much 😘. Mosi lit up my life. I miss her every day.
Sweet Mosi❣️🐾

Agreed. I know you are taking good care of Margo. Give her a hug for me.
Beautiful story about brave sweet Mosi!

Having a good community does help. I ended up teaching three pet sitters how to inject. I will talk about it in Part II. I also taught a few friends.
If you ever do think of taking Juniper on a trip, I would be happy to talk about it. We traveled with Mosi a few times after her diagnosis.
